Staircase with oak treads in a light hall

Stairs

Wooden treads

Wood gives a staircase warmth and weight. New treads, or treads laid over the existing ones, turn an ordinary staircase into a piece of furniture in the house.

Overview

Warm, sturdy and timeless

In a renovation the existing treads are often covered with overlay treads: wooden treads and risers made to fit the old staircase exactly. The structure stays, the look is new. On an open staircase the treads themselves are replaced.

The wood species, the thickness of the tread and the shape of the nosing set the character. Oak is the most common, in a light or a deep tone. Oiled feels natural, lacquered is easier to maintain.

Wood combines well with other materials: wooden treads with risers in the colour of the wall, or with a poured floor on the landing. We coordinate that in one plan.

  • Overlay treads on the existing staircase
  • Oak or another wood species
  • Oiled or lacquered
  • Risers in wood or painted
  • Detail of the grain and nosing of an oak stair tread
  • Oak treads with light risers in the colour of the wall
  • Open staircase with new oak treads along a wall
