Staircase with a wool runner over wooden treads

Stairs

Stair carpet

Carpet makes a staircase soft and quiet. It dampens the sound of footsteps through the house and feels warm underfoot.

Overview

A stair runner or a fully carpeted staircase

A stair runner is a strip of carpet down the middle of the staircase, leaving the tread visible on both sides. The wood or poured floor of the staircase then stays part of the picture. A fully carpeted staircase is calmer, and suits a staircase up to the bedrooms or the attic.

Wool is warm and wears well; sisal and other natural fibres give a coarser, more artisanal texture. We match the colour and the binding of the runner to the treads and the wall.

Carpet is fitted tightly around the nosing of each tread. On a staircase that is also being renovated, we choose the finish of the treads first, so that the runner suits it.
